A two-day symposium on "Controversies in Cancer Pain" is being held at the Cairns Hilton on Thursday & Friday 18-19 August 2005. This symposium is an official satellite symposium of the 11th IASP World Congress on Pain to be held in Sydney the following week, and is being hosted by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. The aim of the symposium is not only to review the status of the traditional controversies in the field of cancer pain, such as "is morphine the best drug?", "is oral the best route of administration?" or "is cancer pain relief a form of euthanasia?", but also to consider emerging controversies as diverse as pharmacogenomics, opioid rotation, cannabinoids, and evidence based medicine.

A variety of international and national experts in the field of cancer pain, headed by Dr Kathy Foley from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York , will be speaking at the symposium.
