Description

The Water Framework Directive aims to create an integrated European approach to improving our water quality. The WFD has taken a major step forward with the submission in March 2005 of each river basin’s characterisation reports to the European Commission. However, these results make concerning reading:

Most bodies of water in the UK are currently at risk of failing to reach the status required by the Directive.

Significant work is now required to both refine the methods of monitoring and create a practical programme of measures to implement the WFD. To do this, however, demands clarity

.How will the WFD filter down to local level?
·What is the definition of good ecological status?
·How much will the Directive cost to implement and who should foot the bill?
·What will the penalties be for failing to meet its objectives?
