The Learning In Our Own Way conference, August 12 - 14, 2005 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Woburn, MA unites homeschoolers, unschoolers, parents, and teachers who want more individualization for childrens’ learning. In an age of increasing standardization and high-stakes testing this event provides “good harbor” for those seeking various ways to help children learn. Speakers include:
• Dr. Thomas Armstrong, an award-winning author (Awakening Your Child’s Natural Genius, Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom) and speaker with over one million copies of his books in print on issues related to learning and human development. Dr. Armstrong speaks about how learning styles can be authentically used to nurture individual development rather than controlled by adults to meet curricular goals.
• John Taylor Gatto climaxed his teaching career as NY State Teacher of the Year in 1991 after being named New York City Teacher of the Year on three occassions. He is the author of Dumbing Us Down, A Different Kind of Teacher, and The Underground History of American Education. Gatto will deliver a keynote address, “Weapons of Mass Instruction.”
• Other speakers include Matt Hern, Founder of the Purple Thistle Teen Learning Center in Vancouver, BC; Ken Danford, co-founder of North Star: Self-directed Learning for Teens of Hadley, MA; Dr. Pat Montgomery, founder of The Clonlara School in Ann Arbor, MI.
• Many non-sectarian homeschooling speakers covering a multitude of issues, such as Homeschoolers of Color, Unschooling Special Needs Children, Teens Without Schooling, Grown Homeschoolers, and more will be explored over the weekend.
