Theme of the Workshop
As part of their international
collaborative activities, the Department of
Adult Continuing Education and Extension,
GRI, and the Focolare Movement, Italy,
propose to organise an international
workshop on Economy of Permanence and
Dynamics of a Sharing Community at GRI
during 25th and 26th July 2005. The
workshop will highlight the major factors
which influence the dynamics of a sharing
community.
It will predominantly deal with
Dr.J.C. Kumarappaís Economy of
Permanence and the spirit of Economy of
Communion, also known as Economy of
Sharing, launched by Chiara Lubich in
Brazil in 1991 and now involving hundreds
of business enterprises all over the globe
which adhere to a culture of sharing as
opposed to a culture of having.
Workshop Objectives
1. To evolve strategies of realizing the
concept of Economy of Permanence
and the Dynamics of a Sharing
Community.
2. To explore the possibility of the
international community striving for a
new economic and social life.
3. To develop a strategy for sharing of
resources for a peaceful societal order.
GRI
It is gratifying that this unique
workshop will be conducted in the campus
of GRI, internationally known as one of the
earliest centres to provide knowledge
support for community development.
Gandhigram was founded in the
year of Indiaís independence (1947) by a
team of dedicated disciples of Mahatma
Gandhi led by Dr.T.S.Soundaram and
Dr.G.Ramachandran. Inspired by the
Mahatmaís concept of Basic Education
(Nai Talim), Gandhigram Rural Institute
(GRI) was started in 1956 as a higher
education centre in Gandhigram campus.
GRI was one of fourteen Rural
Institutes of Higher Education established
under the Government of Indiaís programme
to experiment on the vision of a ëhumanmakingí
educational process based on the
spirit of co-existence. After 20 years of active
work in promoting education through rural
experiences, GRI was conferred the status
of a Deemed to be University in 1976, fully
funded by the Ministry of Human Resource
Development, New Delhi, through the
University Grants Commission.
GRI students are drawn from
various parts of the country besides
developing countries. The objectives of
GRI are
· To provide for instruction and learning
and to promote a classless and
casteless society;
· To provide for research and
advancement and dissemination of
knowledge; and,
· To function as a centre for extension
work leading to integrated rural
development.
The Institute was awarded 5-Star
status by NAAC in February 2002.
Participants
The participants from India and
abroad, especially those who live in tune
with peace and prosperity through sharing
of knowledge, resources and leadership
qualities, will be experts from universities
