Protein engineering can be defined as the use of genetic and chemical techniques to change the structure and function of a protein, thus producing a novel product with specific, desired, properties. Why go through the effort? The worldwide demand for innovative protein therapeutics is growing 30 % each year. As exciting as the field of protein therapeutics is, it is not without challenges. The repertoire of technologies for engineering protein therapeutics is advancing. However, each of these systems has strengths and weaknesses but they all share the goal of developing procedures that will efficiently produce a properly folded, active therapeutic protein. Novel approaches, solutions, and applications are the focus of CHI's Engineering the Next Generation of Proteins for Therapeutics.
