David Epston presents his approach to working with people who are struggling with anorexia/bulimia (a/b). His recent and acclaimed work, co-authored with Rick Maisel and Ali Borden, is Biting the Hand that Starves You: Inspiring Resistance to Anorexia/Bulimia; it is the outcome of 18 years of co-research with those who struggle with the problems of a/b.

The book and this workshop are aimed at both professionals and "insiders" (those who have suffered at the hands of a/b). David's approach is highly collaborative: known as "Anti-a/b", it is based on the idea that a/b deceives people into thinking that it is their friend, coach, mentor, or lover, and can offer them great gifts; by helping people uncover this deceit, a/b can be contested and finally repudiated.*

The workshop will present "insider knowledge" (knowledge that can be gained only by experiencing this suffering and struggling to reclaim one's life from it). The stories and videotape that will be presented will emphasize novel ways of thinking and speaking about a/b. This brings about a vision and practice that helps prevent a/b from turning insiders against themselves, their families, and their communities, and instead inspires and enables them to embrace more of their own freedoms, joys, pleasures, and appetites.
