Since the appearance of CJD in humans, the spread of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies through contaminated animal and human tissue and fluids has been of great concern to researchers producing therapeutics and diagnostics from these sources. The appearance of BSE in herds of cattle born after the introduction of the ruminant feed ban has raised new concerns and questions, as has the appearance of atypical cases of BSE and spread of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in North American deer herds. New data is advancing knowledge about the agent's ability to cross species barriers, transmission through blood transfusion, and options for detection and removal of the agent. Problems continue to exist in the areas of testing and reporting. This conference will present the newest data on TSEs in the context of their data on tses application to the pharmaceutical, food, biological, and device industry.
