Description By opting for the topic "Faith-based Radicalism: Christianity, Islam and Judaism between Constructive Activism and Destructive Fanaticism” the UCSIA summer seminar will address one of the most salient issues of our time: the force of religion and its positive and negative impact on contemporary global society. Religion serves these days as one of the main factors in the radicalisation of ethnic, social and political strife. At the same time it also serves as incentive for communal forms of constructive activism in view of a higher ideal. The question remains why religions sometimes turn to radicalism and why this radicalism is in some instances perceived as threatening fanaticism and in others as constructive activism.

The complexity of the diverse influences at work necessitates a broad, interdisciplinary approach. That is why the seminar will be divided into three different parts, allowing international scholars from different fields to share their insights on the theme.
First scholars in the field of comparative science of religion, theology and history will present their insight in the evidence of faith-based radicalism within the religious sources and establish a theological and conceptual frame. Then psychologists will investigate the psychological mechanisms that influence radical behaviour. Finally social scientists will examine the social, political and economical mechanisms at work.

The seminar is of interest to graduate students and scholars in theology, the humanities (religious studies, philosophy, linguistics, history and literature) and the social sciences (anthropology, sociology, political sciences, law and economics).

Tuition fee, accommodation and meals are furnished by the organizer. In principle, the participant only has to bear his or her travel expenses and his or her personal expenses.

The participants should stay for the whole duration of the seminar.

To be eligible we should receive in return: a completed application form, curriculum vitae, copy of the highest obtained diploma, Statement of purpose (max. 2 pages) and a paper (min. 5 pages) - all to be completed in English.
