Objectives
The general objective of the Symposium Series on Marine Biosciences is to promote discussions and free exchange of ideas at the research frontiers of "marine biosciences". Thus, biochemists, ecologists, microbiologists, natural products chemists, physiologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists can be gathered for a better knowledge of seas and sustainable development of their resources. In contrast to large scientific meetings where personal contacts are sparse and group discussions are almost impossible, small scale Symposium Series can provide valuable means of debating controversial issues and disseminating hypotheses among scientists with common professional interests.
A Symposium on bioactive molecules from the sea
The first Symposium on Marine Biosciences is directly focused on an actual great challenge: the discovery and use of medicines from sea.
Although thousands of bioactive molecules have been isolated from marine organisms, only few drug candidates have reached the stage of clinical trials and pharmaceutical market. What could explain such a situation? In the last decade, Big Pharma companies reduced their R&D operations in natural products research programs and often contracted with small biotech companies, that offer screening services and purified molecules libraries. Development in natural products from marine and terrestrial organisms has to compete with other techniques such as computational chemistry and synthetic compound screening in the complex and expansive process of medicine discovery. What are the challenges faced by marine biomolecules? What are the solutions to main obstacles and what are the avenues to a sustainable development program of medicines from seas?
The main objective of the Symposium on Medicines from the Sea is to discuss key issues mentioned above. Therefore, world leaders in this field will be invited to present their views and ideas. In addition, they will participate in "round-table discussion" and exchange directly with all the other attendees involved in marine biotechnology from both academic research teams and pharmaceutical industry.
