Description In developing autonomous systems, the components that are perceived to endow the system with its autonomy must not be developed in isolation as a special case. The specification and dependencies of the autonomy components must be considered in concert with all other elements of the traditional system including the needs of the human operator and most definitely not as a "bolt-on". Accordingly, as with systems engineering, the process by which highly autonomous system user requirements are captured and their subsequent design, must ideally include the human machine partnership elements and their real-time execution as part of the development process. An obvious conclusion taken from the unmanned air vehicles domain is that the systems engineer must now become familiar with the currently specialist human factors and machine intelligence areas and that these disciplines must understand the needs and constraints of each other.

his conference therefore seeks to promote a new discipline of autonomous systems development across application and domain borders and advances that it is, as a discipline, an enhancement of current systems engineering practice. Furthermore, as autonomous systems will, at some level, always have a human in the loop, this conference believes that the development of autonomous systems is a “human-centric” process rather than predominantly the preserve of the “AI” community.
To promote interdisciplinary cross fertilization
To promote autonomy development as a cross-discipline process
To spread awareness of autonomous system capabilities
