Description Dear Colleagues

We invite you to join us for an outstanding scientific program being presented at the 37th Annual ASN Meeting in Portland, Oregon, March 11-15, 2006. The deadline for online abstract submission is rapidly approaching:
Nov. 1, 2005 at www.asneurochem.org

This year's scientific program can be found at
http://www.asneurochem.org/ASN2006.htm
and is comprised of 3 workshops, 17 colloquia and 8 symposia covering four major themes:
1) Building the Nervous System;
2) Glial Cell Biology;
3) Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology, and
4) Neurodegeneration and Disease.

In addition, short oral presentation sessions will be generated from submitted abstracts and will be featured in the meeting along with daily poster sessions.

Abstracts will be published in a supplemental issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry. Substantial time will be allotted throughout the meeting for scientific discussion both formally and informally. Special efforts have been taken to encourage young investigator participation and numerous travel grants are available.

This year's plenary speakers will be:
1) Jenny P.Y. Ting, PhD. University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina "Unexpected Roles of Inflammatory Cytokines in Neuropathology"

2) Richard Tsien, Ph.D. Stanford University, Palo Alto, California "Insights into the Secret Life of Small Nerve Terminals"

3) Helmut Kettenmann, Ph.D. Max-Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin, Germany "Mechanisms of Neuron Glia Interactions"

4) Freda Miller, Ph.D. The Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada "Neural Precursor Cells: Novel Signals and Sources"

The meeting is taking place in an outstanding location conducive for scientific and social interactions: the Hilton Towers Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Portland’s Arts and Entertainment District, featuring over 40 restaurants and microbreweries within a three-block radius. Also within
walking distance are the Performing Arts Center, Oregon History Center, Portland Art Gallery, the Old Town District and Portland nightlife.

The annual ASN meeting will also feature a public forum focused on "New Directions in Stroke Prevention and Treatment for Children and Adults". An additional skills workshop "Tips for writing a fundable proposal" is also
scheduled and is open to all attendees. Lastly, a premeeting focused on "Identifying Glial-Neuronal Interactions: New Approaches and New Insights" will occur Saturday, March 11, 2006 immediately preceding the opening of the 37th annual ASN meeting.

Our colleagues in the Western Hemisphere and around the World interested in cellular, neurochemical and molecular studies of the nervous system in health and disease should plan to attend the ASN 2006 Annual Meeting.

The ASN Portland Host Committee and the Officers and Council look forward to meeting you in Portland in March.

Sincerely,
Monica J Carson, Program Chair
Mohammad Sabri, Host Committee Chair
