International Seminar on Kerala History
March 2006, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India
Greetings from Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR).
KCHR is organizing an International Seminar at Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala, from 16th to 18th of March 2006, on the state of the art of research in Kerala history. The seminar would bring together scholars working on the history of Kerala in India and abroad. Among the eminent historians and social scientists from outside Kerala who are likely to participate are Prof. Romila Thapar, Prof. Bruce Kapferer, Prof. Robin Jeffrey, Prof. Iqtidar Alam Khan, Prof. Fritz Staal, Prof. Dick Whittaker, Prof. Shahid Amin, Prof. R.Champakalakshmy, Dr. M.S.S Pandiyan, Prof. Dipankar Gupta, Prof. Neeladri Bhattacharya, Prof. Shereen Ratnagar, Prof. Sudharshan Seneviratne and Prof. G Udaya Kumar.
The Seminar is intended to provide a platform for scholars and researchers world wide to interact and experience an intellectually productive event. It will take stock of the trends and developments in historical writing on Kerala, to identify the missing links and point out new directions. The history of Kerala will be examined under four broad themes: Social, Political, Economic and Cultural-Intellectual histories and in a general session which will take care of areas that could not be covered otherwise. Professors Rajan Gurukkal, Kesavan Veluthat, Michael Tharakan and KN Ganesh will present theme papers. Although the categories may sound conventional, we expect the seminar to be an interdisciplinary one. Each of the theme sessions will be presided over by an eminent historian and will have five to seven invited research papers dealing with significant aspects of the general theme. KCHR intends to publish the proceedings of the Seminar which, we hope would provide a critical assessment of the historiography of Kerala.
As part of the seminar two symposia will be organised. They are on - ‘Emerging Areas of Historical Research: Interdisciplinary Dimensions’ and ‘Religious Institutions and their Social Functions’.
The seminar hopes to bring together all who value the significance of historical knowledge irrespective of their academic disciplines. More specifically we expect teachers, post-graduate students and research scholars across disciplinary boundaries to attend the seminar.
With warm regards,
