The Park School of Communications at Ithaca College will hold a two-day conference to study the work of one of television’s best-known and most prolific writers. SUBMITTED FOR YOUR APPROVAL: THE ROD SERLING CONFERENCE will be held on campus April 21-22, and will feature talks by scholars and industry professionals as well as panel discussions, screenings and a writing contest.
The keynote speaker will be Marc Scott Zicree, author of The Twilight Zone Companion, and other major presenters will examine The Loner -- Serling’s rarely-seen western series starring Lloyd Bridges, and the author’s screenplay for the original Planet of the Apes (1967). Additional conference sessions will highlight Serling’s award-winning writing before “The Twilight Zone” as well as his teaching at Ithaca during the late 60’s and early 70’s.
The ROD SERLING SHORT FEATURE SCRIPTWRITING COMPETITION is already underway – with entrants submitting 10-20 page scripts suitable for either The Twilight Zone or Night Gallery by March 24. Contest winners will be selected by Zicree and Carol Serling – who has donated much of her husband’s work to Ithaca College. “The Rod Serling Archive” is the largest collection of the author’s creative work in private hands, and also includes Serling’s six Emmy Awards -- which will be on display at the conference along with other memorabilia.
The conference will wrap up with a special, live “Twilight Zone Marathon.” Based on an “on-line popularity poll” at the Conference website, episodes will be shown – exactly as originally aired – using copies from the Serling Archive.
