LASER Summer School on Software Engineering
September 17-23, 2006
Elba Island, Italy

Practical Programming Processes
(Past, Present, Proposed)
(Proven, Passable, Polemical)

The LASER school is intended both for researchers (including PhD students)
and for professional software engineers and managers who want to benefit
from the best in software technology advances. The focus of LASER is
resolutely practical, although theory is welcome to establish solid
foundations. The format of the school favors extensive interaction between
participants and speakers.

The 2006 LASER takes an in-depth look at Practical Programming Processes.
Many approaches have been proposed in the past decade, from new advances in
object technology to Patterns, Aspects, Extreme/Agile/Lean methods,
incremental development, process standards (CMMI etc.), Open Source and
several others. The school brings together seven speakers:

Ralph-Johan Back, Abo Akademi University
Miguel de Icaza, Novell
Erik Meijer and William Adams, Microsoft
Bertrand Meyer, ETH Zurich/Eiffel Software
Mary Poppendieck, Poppendieck LLC
Andreas Zeller, University of Saarland

with diverse backgrounds but each having made essential contributions to our
understanding of the software development process. They will present and
confront their approaches for the greatest advantage of anyone interested in
better software construction.

LECTURES (6 hours each)

"Lean software development" by Mary Poppendieck

"Incremental software construction" by Ralph-Johan Back

"Open source development" by Miguel de Icaza

"Seamless, reversible, incremental, contract-based O-O development: the
cluster model" by Bertrand Meyer

"Software development at Microsoft: an insider's view" by Erik Meijer and
William Adams

"Mining programs and processes" by Andreas Zeller

The LASER school takes place in the idyllic setting of the island of Elba
off the coast of Tuscany, in the best Elba hotel (Hermitage) with private
beach etc. Ample time is left for recreational activities and interaction
between the participants and lecturers.

Registration is open until 15 May 2006. The number of participants is
strictly limited to ensure quality interaction with the lecturers and the
rest of the audience; all applications must be accompanied by a letter of
recommendation from the applicant's supervisor or manager. A small number of
scholarships are available for participants with insufficient institutional
