The one thing that is constant in the 21st century economy is change. Indeed, technological breakthroughs and globalization have forced structural change in the economies of rural America. The challenge is to make technology and globalization work for rural America, rather than against it. Cutting edge technologies are making it possible for rural areas to compete on par with their urban counterparts. Innovations in communications, educational methods, healthcare and many other areas are improving quality of life and productivity for those communities that embrace them. And the Internet is making global markets accessible to even the most isolated.

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research is contributing to the development of Southside through research and education. The rTech: Technology and Rural Prosperity IT Conference, on April 24-25, will focus on specific technological advances, challenges, and concerns that rural communities like Southside must explore in order to succeed in the innovation economy and achieve public and private sector growth. Participants will learn about the latest new technologies and will engage in discussions about how communities can get ahead of - and capitalize on - constant change.
