The proportion of electronics in vehicles is increasing tremendously. This overall trend has also its impact on the former purely passive tire system turning it more and more into an active part. To develop the “intelligent tire” which collects and passes on safety relevant information is the ambitious aim for tire manufacturers. But what information can and should be analysed? And how to achieve information reliability? The first step towards the intelligent tire has already been made: Tire pressure monitoring systems. Though the systems be will compulsory in the US as of 2006, where remain reliability and improvement questions. To solve these questions is in turn unalienable for a safe use of run flat tires – another important step to enhance vehicle safety.
