Industry experts had once said “ Islamic financial products are fast becoming the darling of the global banking industry, attracting both Muslims and non-Muslims due to the no-interest policies and ethical provisions making Islamic banking a market hard to ignore”.

Interest in Islamic banking has grown considerably during the last decade. The main issues of concern are the conceptual framework and viability of interest-free banking, and the assessment of its performance and future. The Singapore government announced its intentions to enhance relations with the Middle Eastern countries that would go beyond cultural, intellectual and economic spheres. Singapore needs to move fast into Islamic finance or be left behind. Can the success of Islamic banks in other parts of Asia be replicated in Singapore?

In this respect, the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) will be organizing a 2-day conference on Islamic Banking Summit with the theme “Responding to the Challenges of Globalization” in Singapore. The Hon. Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Second Minister for Finance, Republic of Singapore and Dato’ Mohd Razif Abdul Kadir, Deputy Governor, Bank Negara of Malaysia has been invited to deliver the Keynote Addresses.

Islamic banking being a new product albeit its niche area has given some excitement to the financial institutions in Singapore to have access of billion dollars worth of Islamic managed funds worldwide. The advantage of Singapore is its city-state’s reputation as a regional financial centre is trying to capitalize on the Islamic boom.

This Summit aims to bring together leading corporate bankers, regulators, fund managers, takaful experts, lawyers and investors to discuss the foundational knowledge in the basic Shariah laws that govern the practices in Islamic Banking. Whether you are firmly established within this industry or operate within the conventional banking industry this Summit will keep you updated on some latest developments in the Islamic Banking World. This Summit will also give an overview of Islamic Finance opportunities in Singapore and the regulatory issues involved when doing Islamic Banking in the region.
