Box 30 Huye, Tel.: + 250 530 475, Fax : + 250 530 328, E-mail : facmed@nur.ac.rw Background / Context The Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Rwanda, in its strenuous effort to create and promote forums for publication of research results and knowledge updating, launched 10 years ago annual scientific meetings known as « Butare Medical Week-End » from 1996 to 1998 and then as «Butare Medical Conference», jointly organized with the Butare Health Region. In the first years, it convened doctors practicing in Rwanda and the interested public. Afterwards, it gained sub regional and then international participation. The tenth Butare Medical Conference was held in Kigali as the First International Symposium on Infectious Diseases. For the eleventh Butare Medical Conference, the themes not only were chosen based on the priorities of the national health policy according to the Vision 2020 but also constitute the major defiance to reach, at the African and world level, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The pathologic profile of developing countries characterized by the heavy burden of infectious diseases undergoes nowadays a slow but progressive transformation due to the living style and environment changes, which imply an increase of non communicable diseases. Besides, the progress brought by the new information and communication technologies require a revision of teaching and learning methodology. Instructions to speakers The Scientific Committee will give priority to communications related to original research and prevention, diagnosis and treatment updating. For medical pedagogy, concrete experiences, current or programmed innovations are the most welcome. The abstracts, written on a half page in Times New Roman style, police 12, must contain an introduction justifying the study, the methodology, and the results followed by a conclusion. The slides must be in power point format. The languages used in the conference are English or French; the slides must be written in the language different from the language of oral presentation. The Scientific Committee invites the speakers whose abstracts will have been accepted to prepare the manuscript of the article to submit for publication in Revue Médicale Rwandaise.
