Measurement Error: Econometrics and Practice

Birmingham, U.K., July 9-11, 2007

A special conference is planned for July 9-11, 2007, at Aston Business School in Birmingham, U.K. The conference is organized as a joint venture between staff at Aston University and Lund University in Sweden. It is the ambition of the conference organizers to provide a forum with an econometric focus for both producers and users of microeconomic, macroeconomic, and financial data. The key-note speakers of the conference are: Professor Arnold Zellner (University of Chicago), Professor William Barnett (University of Kansas) and Dr. Dennis Fixler, Chief Statistician, U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

The conference organizers are currently soliciting abstracts and papers covering applied or theoretical topics. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

• Consequences of Measurement Error and Data Revisions on Forecasting, Decision-making, and Policy-making
• Measuring Uncertainty in National Income Accounting Data
• Estimation of Parameter Bounds
• Reliability Ratios
• Econometric Aspects of Working with Time Series Data Measured with Errors
• Econometric Aspects of Working with Survey Data Measured with Errors
• GMM and Other Estimation Methods
• Bootstrapping and other Simulation Methods
• Nonparametric Estimation and Measurement Errors
• Measurement Error in Non-linear Models, Time Series Models, and Survey Data
• Optimal Filtering of Incoming National Income Data for Policymaking

It is the intent of the organizers to separate the papers into two tracks. One track will focus on practical aspects of data collection and revision by statistical agencies, and the other on econometric aspects of measurement error. Please e-mail your abstracts or papers no later than April 1st, 2007 to Dr Jane Binner (, Economics and Strategy Group, Aston Business School, Aston University, Birmingham B4 7ET, U.K. (fax: +44 (0)121 204 3306). Papers will be reviewed for the program on a continuing basis, as received. There will be a poster session; authors may request inclusion in the poster session rather than regular presentation. Papers received after April 1 will be considered for the program on a space-available basis. Proposals to organize focused, topical sessions are welcome and encouraged; interested persons should email Dr. Jane Binner (

The organizers intend to publish selected papers from the conference in a post-conference volume entitled Measurement Error: Econometrics and Practice. These papers should be sufficiently detailed that economists and econometricians who are not experts in the topic will find them useful guides to research. To that end, authors should provide, upon request, computer programs utilized in their papers.
