Description
Now, we are contented to invite you to participate in the 5th International Gazimaðusa Symposium 2007, encoded on the theme of M e d i - T r i o l o g y : Coastal Settlements – Culture and Conservation in the Mediterranean Basin.
Needless to say, coastal zones have always preserved their dynamism in history as major attraction poles for their large potential of cities, harbors, industries, infrastructure, and valuable resources, natural, cultural, and architectural heritage. Yet, the beneficial and/or detrimental effects of their role as magnets have been expanding coastal cities to populations almost reaching 10 million inhabitants. Due to rapid population growth, all coastal locations - including mega cities - face environmental risks of accelerated global sea-level rise and other coastal implications of climate change. Besides environmental risks, coastal settlements are also subject to physical and social problems arising from mass tourism as well as rapid urbanization. Surely, these problems and potentials preserve their vitality not only for European or Asian cities but also for the Mediterranean coastal settlements.
Under this scope, The symposium aims to draw attention to the importance of the balance between conservation and development in the coastal settlements within the Mediterranean basin as the economic and social/cultural development remain crucial for the sustenance of coastal areas. Accordingly, what should be spoken or stressed at the 5th Gazimaðusa Symposium are;
• The planning and management of coastal settlements which offer spatial planning policies that promote economic and social development and ensure the protection of nature, of areas for biological diversity, of landscape and of cultural heritage and the accessibility and free movement of the public to and along the coast.
• The sustenance and conservation of culture, cultural heritage, nature and landscape values in the coastal settlements within the Mediterranean basin by the introduction of appropriate measures.
• Cultural policies that facilitate the sustenance of local identity and social values.
The symposium will take place under the auspices of Eastern Mediterranean University, Faculty of Architecture and Municipality of Gazimaðusa, a small Mediterranean city at the heart of the Eastern Mediterranean coast. The ideal is to help the authors that will gather here in this small city raise their voices by speaking through Coastal settlements, Culture and Conservation trio where the main goal will be to emphasize the problems and potentials of the coastal spaces such as archeological sites, marinas, harbors, rural and urban areas in the Mediterranean basin that possess rich cultural and architectural values. This will have significant contributions to the sustainability of the socio-economic structure of the Mediterranean region.
The aimed discussion arena will be of multi-disciplinary structure where local authority officials, academicians, design practitioners and local community with an extensive range of ideas and experiences will have the opportunity to exchange their ideas within the context of planning and management of coastal zones, preservation and sustenance of culture and conservation of cultural, natural and architectural heritage of these settlements within the Mediterranean Basin.
The stage will be set for a Mediterranean trio, Coastal settlements – Culture -Conservation which will cover theories, concepts methods, case studies, projects, innovative ideas and approaches within the context of Mediterranean coastal settlements.
