| Description |
The considerable theoretical and empirical literature on the role of the modern State remains as yet largely unexplored within the Portuguese context. As with other EU members, Portugal faces a set of challenges that have given rise to strong demands for reforms of the role and functioning of the State. While the need for reforms (if not their actual content) appears to be relatively consensual, as evidenced by the successive calls from various political quarters, existing evidence suggests that actual reform processes are largely sub-specified, fragmentary and partial.
This international conference seeks to analyse the comparative and theoretical backdrop of public sector reform processes, and examine the general Portuguese experience within this backdrop. As such, it will bring together national and international experts providing a forum for researchers to discuss the Portuguese experience in light of the growing body of work in the field of public intervention.
This international conference is organised the University of Aveiro’s Centre for the Study of Governance and Public Policy, and will take place at the University of Aveiro on the 20th and 21st April 2006.
