Building Resiliency in Children and Families
A 2 day international, interdisciplinary conference

Aims and Objectives
This two-day international, interdisciplinary conference will explore key themes related to understanding and building resiliency in children and their families. This will include a focus on:
1. Concepts and theories of resiliency in children and families across cultures
2. Interventions that help build resiliency in children and families, including prevention and treatment
3. Research methods and findings from the study of resiliency across cultures and contexts
This conference will be of interest to researchers, clinicians, children’s nurses, family workers, social workers, child advocates, youth workers, teachers, community workers and people from the voluntary sector.
Delegates who attend will be able to share their work and ideas regarding factors that are critical to child and family health, well-being and resilience.
The conference will provide a unique opportunity to discuss and integrate the latest work and ideas involving resiliency theory, research and practice. It will reflect a wider discourse that will include solution-focused and narrative therapy perspectives.
First Call for Papers
We would like to invite submission of abstracts of up to 150 words for: 30 minute papers (with 10 minutes of questions); 90 minute symposia (minimum of three people); and/or posters. Deadline for submission of abstracts is 15th September 2006.
Abstracts should be submitted within one of the following themes:
1. Resilience and Cultural Issues
2. Resilience and the Young Child
3. Resilience and Family Work
4. Resilience and Mental Health/Well-Being
5. Resilience and Vulnerable Children/Young People
6. Resilience and Education
7. Resilience and Post-modern Perspectives
8. Resilience and Research Methodologies
Abstract Requirements
Abstracts should be submitted by email (Microsoft Word file preferred) to ejkelly@uclan.ac.uk. The subject line of the email should clearly state ‘Building Resilience in Children and Families’ Abstract’. All abstracts will be viewed by the Conference Review Committee.
The abstract must include the following:
• Title
• Author/presenter name(s), institution represented, postal address, email address. Please indicate who is the primary contact - this will be the person we contact.
• A 150 word abstract that includes (as appropriate) context, key themes to be covered, conclusion and implications for practice.
• A maximum of five relevant references
• Clearly indicate if submitting for paper, symposium or poster.
• Clearly indicate which theme you are submitting your abstract to.
• A short biography of authors
Notification
You will be notified of acceptance or rejection of your abstract by email by 13th October 2006.
Please note that all presenters will be required to register for the conference and pay the fee which will be approx £250 plus VAT for the 2 days, non-residential.
