Description The Seventh Annual Global Conference on Environmental Taxation is part of an annual series of academic conferences characterized by an international and multidisciplinary flavour. The conference provides a forum for legal scholars, economists, political scientists, conservationists, representatives of the private sector and others to exchange the latest research on the use of environmental taxes and other economic instruments to advance environmental policy objectives. Economic instruments range from user charges on pollutants or resource use to loans and grants for the development of sustainable technology to emissions trading.

The theme of this year's conference is moving from theory to practice. The conference program will present research that examines the role of fiscal and other economic instruments in helping society transition to environmentally sustainable, just and prosperous economies. Research presented at the conference will be grouped within the following six sub-themes:

Political feasibility – Generating political support for implementation of environmental taxes and other economic instruments.

Competitiveness – How economic instruments can help enhance global competitiveness through eco-efficiency, resource productivity and innovation.

Subsidies – The role of restructuring existing fiscal policy.

Instrument choice – How to select the right instruments (including when to use a mix of instruments) and evaluate their effectiveness.

Valuation and measurement – How to value and measure natural capital to help with instrument design and evaluation.

Case studies – A variety of case studies of environmental tax and other economic instruments used in different countries, including case studies that raise equity considerations and highlight the use of instruments in developing countries, within a regional context,

The preliminary program is available on the conference website.
