Description To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the International Council for Science (ICSU), the National Academy of Sciences and Student Pugwash USA are jointly organizing a symposium that will explore the unique challenges facing biologists who must grapple with dual-use implications of their research. The symposium will take place on Friday, October 27th, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. We are specifically tailoring the program to college and graduate students in the biological sciences.

In the morning, expert scientists will deliver an overview of dual-use issues. Meeting participants will then break into working groups to examine a case study involving a dual-use dilemma in biology and discuss the avenues that must be considered and the difficult choices that scientists face throughout the process. After lunch, we will explore tools that scientists are creating to address these problems, and what young scientists must consider from a biosecurity standpoint as they move toward their careers. Participating scientists include:

-Dr. Gigi Kwik Grönvall, Center for Biosecurity, Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center
-Dr. Christina Smolke, Assistant Professor, Chemical Engineering, Caltech
-Dr. Michael Stebbins, Biosecurity Project Director, Federation of American Scientists
-Member, National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (to be announced)
-Yudhijit Bhattacharjee, Correspondent, Science Magazine (Moderator)

The NAS-Student Pugwash symposium will be a terrific opportunity to engage young people on this important issue, and it is also an excellent way to commemorate ICSU's worldwide work to strengthen science for the benefit of society.
