Program Presentation:
The Eighth Olympiad of the Mind
'Brain Research: Improving Global Harmony'

After hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution, the secrets of the brain remain relatively unknown. In the pursuit of uncovering its many complexities, various scientific disciplines have grown more and more dependent upon one another, allowing us to approach neuroscience from an increasingly multidisciplinary perspective. Undoubtedly, we live in a hyper-connected era where all scientific research is better understood from such a perspective.

The International S.T.E.P.S. Foundation would like to introduce a preliminary program for the "Eighth Olympiad of the Mind," hosted by the United States National Academies in Washington DC. The Olympiad, to be held in November 2007, will unite experts from across a worldwide scientific spectrum to address the theme: 'Brain Research: Improving Global Harmony'. In our efforts to understand the complexities of the brain we are obliged to examine all scientific disciplines, including the physical, life and behavioral sciences, and we hope to achieve progress in current research, dialogue, debate and policy surrounding this most challenging and exciting idea.

The goal of the Eighth Olympiad is improved education and social harmony through brain research. We will discuss the narrowing gap between neuroscience and the practice of education. A mutual understanding of both fields will impact curriculum development and consequently lead to revelations in how we learn, how to maximize our intellectual capacity, how to improve special education and above all, how to teach most effectively.
In addition to the improvement of education for all, the Eighth Olympiad's focus on the brain has great potential for analysing the links between brain activity and exogenous factors such as Science, Technology, Economics, Politics, and Society. Multidisciplinary brain analysis can lead to a greater understanding of issues of social interaction, violence, security, macro-ethics, and constructed notions of self and other that lead to territorial disputes or extremism etc. Brain/Neuroscience research may hold the answer to one of our century's most pressing questions: how do we live together peacefully and securely?
