Description ERES 2007 is the sixth international conference focusing on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures. This well established meeting has been running over the last decade since it first started in Thessaloniki. These scientific meetings have provided a unique forum for the discussion of basic and applied research in earthquake engineering that is relevant to improved structural design. All the conferences have generated volumes with proceedings of great value to the engineering community, plus a number of specialized volumes comprising the series on `Advances in Earthquake Engineering’ issued by WIT Press.

The problem of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions of the world is multi-faceted since it involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities, but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures and infrastructures. The latter is a daunting and expensive task, which can be accomplished only gradually. Given however the inestimable loss of life and hugh financial cost associated with major earthquakes in densely populated areas, it is clear that earthquake mitigation is an important challenge for the global engineering community and a major social priority for national governments in seismically-prone countries.

This conference aims to present state-of-the-art information on the analysis and design of structures subjected to earthquakes, including topics such as the geophysical aspects; the behaviour of historical buildings, seismic isolation, retrofi tting, base isolation and energy absorption systems, as well as a wide range of applications and case studies.

ERES 2007 will create an atmosphere that is conducive to fruitful interaction and exchange of ideas as well as the transfer of state-of-the-art information between engineers, scientists and managers working in industry, universities, research organisations and government.

Conference topics include:
- Site effects and geotechnical aspects
- Earthquake resistant design
- Seismic behaviour and vulnerability
- Structural dynamics
- Monitoring and testing
- Bridges
- Heritage buildings
- Masonry construction
- Retrofitting
- Passive protection devices and seismic isolation
- Lifelines
- Design codes and response spectre
