With the accelerating pace of globalization in the financial industry, and the private equity sector in particular, the investment horizon has increasingly expanded towards the emerging markets. The massive purchasing power of Eastern European's emerging middle class sparked economic growth in the region and as a result has attracted global businesses. In addition, positive economic and regulatory developments have stirred up interest in private equity activity in the region. The Russian market has emerged as a leader, in both sheer size and, more importantly, viable opportunities.

Many Eastern European companies are flourishing under improved economic conditions and require additional capital to develop. Yet capital scarcity, coupled with an inefficient lending system, position private equity uniquely to drive and profit from companies’ growth. The private equity portfolio of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the largest investor in private equity funds in Central and Eastern Europe, achieved IRRs of approximately 55% and 40% in 2005 and 2004, respectively.

The International Council of Institutional Investors has joined efforts with the political and economic elites of Eastern Europe, to hold the inaugural Emerging Markets Private Equity Conference (EMPEC) at the Russian Federation Chamber of Commerce & Industry in Moscow on June 4-5, 2007. EMPEC is supported by the Russian Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Pacific Corporate Group, a leading private equity firm. This "must attend" two-day private equity conference will showcase over 30 speakers consisting of leading Limited Partners & Private Equity Investors, moderated by top industry experts, as they review private equity investing in Eastern Europe, and make their predictions for 2008.

By way of background, in May 2006, the ICII pursued a joint initiative with several of today's emerging market political and economic thought leaders. The inaugural two-day EMPEC was held at the World Trade Center Moscow and featured several of the top decision-makers in private equity. These participates included world-class institutional investors, such as New York State Common Retirement Fund, preeminent international private equity and venture capital groups, including Texas Pacific Group and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and global financial institutions, such as the Overseas Private Investment Corporation of the U.S. Government. Additionally, key partners of the conference included the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the London Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, and a leading private equity institutional advisory firm, Pacific Corporate Group. Finally, Otkritie Asset Management, an institutional trust management firm, was the lead sponsor of the conference.

We look forward to seeing you at EMPEC!
