| Description |
Substance abuse prevention with rural ethnic communities is an issue that demands increased attention. The disparity between health outcomes between minority and non-minority families is well documented. African American youth in rural communities have been especially impacted by lack of healthcare services including preventative care. To complicate matters, many rural communities lack the resources or infrastructure to consider the cultural competence or appropriateness of substance abuse prevention efforts.
Based on this literature, the proposed conference is organized to provide a rigorous introduction to the Strategic Prevention Framework, and address four concerns:
· Exploration of the growing rate of youth substance abuse in rural communities, which often exceeds that of urban centers.
· Planned strategies to address the lack of adequate resources to address the problem in many rural southern communities.
· Understanding of the differential influence of individual risk or protective factors associated with rural substance use.
· Exploration of science-based prevention strategies that address the unique cultural values of rural ethnic youth.
