Description

The conference includes 4 sessions, the themes of which are as follows:

* Emerging, re-emerging and persistent diseases
The principal questions guiding the theme of this session are:
o What are the examples of serious emerging diseases, and how/where do they originate?
o What can we predict, and how can we prepare and react?
o What progress are we making against existing serious diseases worldwide?

* Global sustainability and biology
The principal questions guiding the theme of this session are:
o Are we disinvesting and destroying our biological future resources?
o How can we reconcile progress with “biosensitivity”?
o What balance should we strike between ensuring bulk ecological health and protecting biodiversity and special ecosystems?

* Treatment and enhancement
The principal questions guiding the theme of this session are:
o Where do we draw the line between necessary therapy and questionable improvement via gene therapy?
o What is currently possible, and what will/might be possible in future?
o Are there limits to the applications of science in human “improvement”?
o Are the concepts of transhumans and posthumans merely farfetched science fiction?

* Human evolution: once were apes
The principal questions guiding the theme of this session are:
o Are humans still evolving, and if so, in which direction?
o Clearly, gene pools are mixed by interbreeding; what proportion and which type of change are due merely to mixing?
o Why should this interest us at scientific, societal and philosophical levels?
o How will the human race change as a result of social evolution and demographic change?
