As Asian universities rapidly internationalise their campuses, a new strand of professionalism is developing amongst their administrators and academics. New challenges have arisen in creating international exchange and study abroad programes, attracting full-time international students, providing suitable study programmes for them, introducing new languages of instruction, ensuring a beneficial study experience, and much more.
Until 2005, no regular forum for discussion of these vital matters existed in the Asia region when the QS Asia Pacific Professional Leaders in Education Annual Conference - QS APPLE - filled that gap with its first highly successful meeting in Singapore in August of that year.
The second QS APPLE was again held in the refined surroundings of Nanyang Technological University, 12 - 14 July. Overlapping it was the renamed QS Partners in Education Workshop - Asia, the first of three such Workshops to be staged in 2006.
The 440 participants at the combined events represented a 10% increase over the 2005 attendance, emanating from 42 different countries. Many university presidents and vice-chancellors joined international directors, departmental deans and other senior university and college officers to enjoy 57 parallel sessions presented by experts and leaders in their fields, three highly stimulating plenary sessions with seven key speakers, a fun opening reception at Singapore Zoo and an atmosphere of convivial networking, making many new and important contacts.
Feedback from post-event questionnaires completed by delegates was extremely positive. Taking an average of scores out of six for sixteen different aspects (see table below) the overall event enjoyed a very healthy 4.9 - or 82%. No aspect attracted a score of less than 4.2. QS Education Trust prides itself on its team's consistent organisational skills and high service levels to achieve such results at only its second conference. These are criteria that will not only be maintained but even further improved in future conferences.
Feedback from speakers was even more impressive. The six factors that they assessed (see table 2) gave an average of 5.4 out of six, or 90%. This surely confirms that the speaking experience at QS APPLE is not one to be missed!
