The recent advances in electrical, electronics and instrumentation industry through rapid changes have enormous impact on the power and communication sector. The worldwide Power Sector is in the process of reforms through regulation, deregulation and restructuring. The Electronics communication sector is in the process of reforms through VLSI and Embedded technology. As a result the environment faced by electric utilities and their operating procedures have changed dramatically both in the developed and developing countries.
Application of local and wide area networks, microprocessors, microcontrollers and graphical user interfaces have facilitated efficient real-time management and control of modern system with intelligent field devices. These devices enable better event logging, faster corrective measures, improved power quality & efficient management as well as monitoring of safety & security. Manufacturers of metering, breaker trip units, power system and motor protection units, lighting controls and many other types of field devices are continuously endeavoring to make their equipment smarter leading to intelligent power distribution system.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has also provided a new technological framework in the Power and Communication sector to accelerate the growth and to enable basic changes in the mechanism of delivery of services. Today, ICT has tools to facilitate addressing various issues being faced by the energy sector.
To focus on the above and other emerging issues in Power and Communication Sector and convergence into ICT, the IET-UK, Chennai Branch and Dr.M.G.R.University are co-organizing a three-day international conference on “ICT in Electrical Sciences” during 20-22 December, 2007 at Dr.M.G.R.University, Chennai, India. The conference will explore the deep-rooted linkages between existing and emerging concerns faced by the Power and Communication sector, develop appropriate strategies and decision making tools that would address the concerns and create awareness of the best practices in the fields of technology, management, procurement and synergy with ICT towards overall development of the country.
