The transition into management from a technical role can be extremely challenging. The day-to-day responsibilities change, the expectations increase, the working relationships shift, and the intrinsic rewards of the job change. The skills needed to be successful supervisors or leaders are quite different from those required for intense technical work. Technical professionals must balance their technical skills and knowledge with the skills needed to manage teams, lead initiatives and make recommendations. Technical leaders need to understand the business and communicate effectively with their peers, business partners and management.
