Dear Friends and Colleagues,
THE FIFTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SPOUTED BEDS, ISSB-2008, is the fifth conference in a series which started in 1973 in Canada. The past four, which were all held in Vancouver, Canada, in 1973, 1982, 1991 and 2002, have put the emphasis on fundamental research to stimulate exchange of ideas from researchers all over the world in order to develop generic tools and theories for applications.
ISSB-2008 that will be held for the first time outside Canada will continue the tradition of this conference series, with its focus on fundamental research on spouted beds, but it will significantly expand into emerging applications of spouted bed and novel spouted bed technologies, especially those related to new processes for the production of environment-friendly chemicals, pharmaceuticals and renewable and sustainable energy, such as hydrogen and bio-fuels. The symposium organizing committee is pleased to invite you to participate in ISSB-2008. ISSB-2008 will offer a unique platform to promote exchanges between all fields using spouted beds.
ISSB-2008 will focus on, but not confined to, the following topics
I. Hydrodynamics of Conventional Spouted and Spout-Fluid Beds.
II. Hydrodynamics of Non-Conventional Spouted and Spout-Fluid Beds.
III. Heat and Mass Transfer.
IV. Modeling and Scale-Up.
V. Applications of Spouted and Spout-Fluid Beds.
Call for Papers
Prospective authors are requested to submit abstracts of their papers by November 15 , 2007. Notification on acceptance or otherwise of the paper for presentation (based on the abstract) will be provided in January 30 , 2008. It is also planned to publish full papers in a single issue of the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering (CJChE) in 2008. Manuscripts submitted for this purpose will be due at a later date and will be subjected to the normal CJChE review procedures. Instructions to Authors will be provided after abstracts are accepted.
The abstract may be uploaded online to the ISSB-2008 website or be sent by e-mail attachment. The abstract should be in accord with the following instructions.
I. The abstract should be submitted either in Microsoft Word or in PDF. It can include figures and tables if necessary, but may not exceed two pages. It should be single spaced typed in English using A4 sized paper.
II. The title should be in upper case for the first letter followed by lower case for the remaining without underlining. It should be center-aligned.
III. The author(s) name and affiliation as well as contact address should be typed in the same manner under the title.
IV. Times New Roman font should be used. The font size for title and headings should be 14 points. Author(s) name, contact address and text should be 12 points.
V. The abstract should not exceed 800 words.
VI. At least one of the listed conference topics should be identified.

The proceedings containing all the abstracts and an accompanying CD will be distributed to the participants at the beginning of the conference.
The conference will be held at Fengshan Resort Center , Changping, Beijing , China . Changping is one of the satellite towns of Beijing, the capital city of China. The conference hotel is close to the Sixth Ring road of Beijing, 15 minutes from Ming Tombs, 30 minutes from the Olympics Village and the Great wall, and 45 minutes from Beijing International Airport.
