The dilemma for higher education in this nation during the 21st Century will be institutional sustainability. The growing demands placed on the higher education sector to educate and develop this nations next generation of intellectual capital as future leaders in an information transfer global market economy is rapidly outpacing smaller and mid-sized institutions ability to fund needed institutional academic mandates. As a result, presidents, chancellors and governing bodies at these institutions are looking to their endowments as a viable means of offsetting the cost of the annual operating budgets. Endowment funds are now a larger part of institutional strategic planning as well as a key completion factor to major construction project allocations on numerous campuses nationwide. The challenge is the growing cost to educate students at institutions with small endowments whose annual yield is not of significant income, coupled with the current downturn of the global investment and credit banking market.
