International Conference

Technical Chemistry. From Theory to Praxis

to be held on September 8-12, 2008 on the basis of Institute for Technical Chemistry of the Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences (City of Perm, Russia).

The aim of the conference is to give Russian and foreign researchers an opportunity to discuss latest achievements in solving problems of basic and applied researches in organic chemistry and in material sciences.

Topics of the conference include:
• Investigation of reactivity and of reaction mechanisms of the organic synthesis;
• Structure and reactivity of heterocyclic compounds;
• Directed functionalization of natural compounds;
• Theory and praxis of heterogenic processes, incl. extraction and ion flotation, absorption and catalysis;
• Synthesis and investigation of structure and properties of polymers and of biopolymers;
• Nano-systems and composites.

The scientific program will include plenary presentations (30 min.), oral presentations (15 min.) and poster session. The conference languages are Russian and English.

Brief Information on Institute for Technical Chemistry (Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences)Perm, Russia

The Institute for Technical Chemistry was established in 1985 as a facility of Ural Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Specialists of the Institute are qualified and motivated scientists capable to conduct both basic and applied research in various fields of chemistry. The Institute is equipped with appropriate labware.

Main research areas:
• Development of scientific principles of the making of self-optimizing high-filled polymer systems comprised of nano-dispersible compounds of various functions. Synthesis procedure of nano-dispersible systems, investigation and control of structure and properties thereof; creation of innovative technologies for the making of functional composites.
• Development of single-reactor synthesis procedures of complicated polycyclic and heterocyclic systems on the basis of industrially accessible raw materials.
• Determination of the structure and investigation of complexing properties and of pharmacological activity of synthesized compounds. Investigation of features and mechanisms of mutual effects of atoms in organic, element-organic and coordination compounds; investigation of dynamics and formation mechanism thereof; linkage of biologically activity of organic compounds with results of their calculated characteristics by means of quantum chemistry methods.

• Investigation of balance in water heterogeneous systems containing ions of metals and organic ligands.

1.Laboratory of oxidizing catalysis in melted electrolytes
Main research areas:
• Study of kinetics and of mechanism of partial and complete oxidation of organic substances in melted electrolytes;
• Study of absorption ad oxidation of halogen-containing organic compounds on melted and solid catalysts;
• Development of catalysts for environmentally safe disposal of liquid and organic wastes from industrial productions

2.Laboratory of structural chemical modifications of polymers
Main research areas:
• Study of regularities of structural transformations during interaction of polymer systems with high-energy physical flows. Most impressive results have been obtained on the investigation of structural transformations of polymer systems exposed to heat and ionizing radiations.
• Results of investigations into elastomer-based composites exposed to high-temperature gas flows have formed a base of a new concept of thermal protection for units of space rockets.
• Research of surface modification of polymer materials (fibers, films, solid-block products) by means of pulsed ion-beam treatment is underway. Chemical nature of the surface, alteration peculiarities in permolecular structure of irradiated materials as well as impact of ion types, of their energy and of radiation dose on mechanical, adhesive and tribological characteristics have been studied.
• Synthesis of oligomers for the making of polymer films with glass transition temperature Tg  -50C by means of photo-polymerization.

3.Laboratory of active reagents’ synthesis
Main research areas:
The study of pathways of nitril ion stabilization has been the main research theme since 2000. Results have allowed to suggest multi-component schemes of synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocycles of 3,3-dialkyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolines, of partially hydrogenated phenanthridines and perhydroindolines, of spiropyrroline-cyclohexadienones and led to production of a number of compounds with high pharmaceutical activity. An analgesic medication is now on the clinic probation.

4.Laboratory of organic extraction agents
Main research areas:
• Synthesis and research of nitrogen-containing reagents for processes of concentrating and of separation of non-ferrous and of less-common metals.

Scientific interests:
• Synthesis of ligands based on organic derivatives of hydrazine and of pyrazolones; on monomer-allylic derivatives of hydrazides for production of copolymers;
• Study of ligands as multi-functional reagents (extragents, flotation reagents for ions of non-ferrous and of less-common metals, biocides, corrosion inhibitors etc.);
• Development of waste water treatment methods (removal of toxic metals and of organic substances);
• Utilization of petrochemical wastes for obtaining useful products (lubricants, desiccants, reagents for oil production etc.);
• Development of analytical methods for metals and organic substances

5.Laboratory of polymeric composite materials
Main research areas:
• Theory and mechanisms of plasticization of micro-heterogeneous polymers with block structure;
• Theoretic and experimental investigations into regularities of mechanical and thermal behaviour of elastomers with strong intermolecular interaction at both negative and positive temperatures;
• Development of design principles for polyurethane with wide range of regulated properties and lowest raw materials’ costs;
• Low power-consuming synthesis of polyurethanes;
• New constructive, formulating and technological solutions for production of wear-resistant and reinforced polyurethane pipes run in aggressive environment.

6.Laboratory of multiphase dispersive systems
Main research areas:
• Investigation of interaction processes in multiphase systems;
• Creation of theoretical, experimental and methodological principles of the formation of spatial structure of dispersed component particles in various system classes and control of heterogeneous structure of filled polymer materials including a wide spectrum of computer simulations, of experimental methods and installations which allow to investigate processes taking place in powder-like and filled oligomer systems and to carry out optimization of geometrical parameters of spatial structure of particles in a material.
• Creation of a complex research methodology which is supposed to be applied to particle interaction processes in oligomer environment. The study of interaction on the interface in two-phase polymer systems and the modification of the polymer material surface. The study of chemical nature of polymer material surfaces and quantitative counting of chemically active groups on the surface of a polymer material. Investigation of formation of chemical structure and properties of materials in the boundary layer.
• Development of materials with different functions and optimization of technological production parameters thereof.

7.Laboratory of asymmetric synthesis and of biologically active compounds
Main research areas:
• Study of reactive activity and of opportunity of chemical modification of higher polyciclic terpenoids aimed at synthesis of new N-, S- and B-containing compounds which are supposed to be perspective for production of medications, of chiral reagents and of ligands for asymmetric synthesis and enantioselective metal-complex catalysis.
• Biocatalytic transformation of polycyclic isoprenoids, of aliphatic and aromatic sulfides, of linear and cyclic alcohols with the use of actinobacteria.
• Development of new pharmacologically active substances (neuroregulators, antihypoxants, analgesics, antiflogistics) based on N-, S-containing compounds.

8. Laboratory of physical investigation methods
Main research areas:
• Study of electronic and spatial structure of organic, organometallic and coordinative compounds, of peculiarities and mechanism of atomic interaction in molecules of the said compounds by means of physical methods (nuclear quadrupole resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy etc.) as well as by means of quantum chemistry methods (non-empirical and semi-empirical methods).

Venue The conference will be held at the Ural Venice health center. The health center is located 60 km far from Perm, in a picturesque nook of the City of Dobryanka, on beach area of Kama River, near pine forest. Participants of the conference will be accommodated in single- and double rooms. Social Events and Tours The City of Perm is one of largest cities of Ural, center of Perm Region. It is located at the foot of Ural Mountains which divide Europe and Asia, on both banks of Kama River which is the first-rate tributary of Volga – of the 4th longest river of Europe (1805 km long). Perm stretches along Kama and Chussovaya rivers for nearly 70 km. Modern Perm is a first-rate administrative, industrial, scientific and cultural center located at the hub of transportation links (see ). On participants’ request, a city tour including visit to Perm Art Gallery will be organized, alongside with tours outside the city. The largest professional theatre of the Perm Region is the Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre that is well known far beyond the region’s boundaries. Participants of the conference will be given an opportunity to visit the Theatre ( Overview of Tours The Khokhlovka Wooden Architecture Museum A quaint wooden town is located near the Khokhlovka village, on a picturesque high cape from three directions washed by waters of Kama River reservoir. This is the Perm architectural-ethnographic museum displaying on the area of 42 hectares 19 monuments of wooden architecture of the Perm Region which date back to 17-20 centuries. The interiors and exhibitions organized by scientific staff of the museum are placed in many of them. The fantastic wooden city - Perm architectural-ethnographic museum is located at village Khokhlovka in 45 kilometers from Perm. The museum is located on picturesque high cape, from three parties washed by waters of reservoir of the river Kama. 19 monuments of wooden architecture of the Perm area of an extremity 17th - beginning 20th of centuries are located here on square in 42 hectares. The interiors and exhibitions are placed in many from them. ( The Kungur Ice Cave The city of Kungur known for its famous Ice Cave is located 100 km far from Perm. First explorations of the cave were made yet in 18 century. Nowadays the Ice Cave is a unique natural phenomenon of All-Russian importance, the only cave in Russia equipped for excursions. It is located on the right bank of Silva River, on the north-east outskirts of Kungur and is a prominent karst object, the biggest gypsum cavern of the Ural, the 6th longest cave (5600 m) among all karst caverns of the world. The total volume of its grottoes amounts to more than 100 000 m3. The Kungur Ice Cave comprises over 60 lakes filled with amazingly clean water.
