| Description |
The Aspergillus field is in a state of rapid advancement, including the publications of the genomes of Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus oryzae providing a huge impetus for basic research. Additionally, the launch of several newer antifungals in the last few years and anticipated clinical trials of several more is an important therapeutic step forward, without precedent in mycology. Despite the incidence of invasive aspergillosis increasing and the disease being the leading fungal cause of patient mortality, prior to the 2004 AdvancesAgainst Aspergillosis meeting there had been little communication among experts in the area. This is another chance to gather the world's aspergillosis experts in one venue. A fundamental tenet of this research colloquium continues to be to engender collaborative relationships amongst clinicians, scientists, and industry to further advance the field.
