Description MDC07: LATERAL + VERTICAL
Lateral (Bridging)
Vertical (Building)

The Monterey Design Conference (MDC) is all about sharing ideas and inspiring architects, designers and benefactors to push their boundaries as much as possible.

We must admit to the every day influences that tend to deter this innovation (economics, clients, politics, etc.) yet for this year’s MDC, we know that accessibility to an array of diverse speakers from Asia, Europe and the United States, will provide attendees with the tools necessary to bridge laterally, and build vertically, when endeavoring in future design and architectural efforts.

Together conference participants will examine the notions of “Lateral + Vertical” and unearth its many meanings. In our initial thinking, vertical is about aspiring to new heights while considering the past, while lateral thinking is about utilizing what worked, and discarding the ineffective. Vertical thinking is digging the same hole deeper; lateral thinking is trying again elsewhere.

Design and architecture may play a special role as mediator between vertical innovation and lateral environments. Lateral isn’t always progressive nor is vertical comprised of element upon element. A possible interpretation incorporates a non-linear approach to “Lateral + Vertical”; one that integrates both movements. Move lateral and jump vertically to get to the appropriate place (one, two, six then nine). Aspire vertically, yet skip a rung or two along the way, or even at times, jump laterally to an alternate track, leading to a whole new journey.

In giving form to space and shape to matter, practitioners anchor their projects in multilayered built landscapes of the past, reflect on present conditions and conjectures, and project possible futures of the world.
Additional Information Nestled along the shoreline of California's famed Monterey Peninsula, Asilomar is a tranquil ocean front retreat cradled by forests and white sand beaches. Designed by acclaimed architect Julia Morgan and embracing the Arts & Crafts architectural style, the Asilomar conference center harmonizes with its natural surroundings and has played host to thousands of visitors since its founding in 1913.

Confirmed speakers: Tod Williams and Billie Tsien (New York); Shiguri Ban (Tokyo)Peter Davey (London); Aaron Betsky (Cincinati) Simeon Brunner (Boston); Craig Dykers of Snřhetta (Norway); Qingyun Ma of MADA s.p.a.m (Los Angeles and China).
