Exploitation and management of shellfish populations is an important issue for stakeholder groups such as shellfish industry, nature conservation NGO’s and governments. Uncertainty in resource availability (recruitment, algal production and quality, space) puts pressure on the industry and asks for innovations. For environmental protection, knowledge is required of impacts of shellfish exploitation and of methods for restoration and improvement of exploitation. Regulation and management of exploited shellfish resources, particularly in nature conservation areas, is a priority issue for governmental institutions as conflicts of The theme will be: “Innovation in the exploitation and management of shellfish resources”.
The following topics will be addressed:
• recruitment (e.g. spatfall dynamics and management)
ecosystem based management (e.g. carrying capacity, integrated multitrophic aquaculture)
• stakeholder involvement and management (e.g. shellfish management and nature conservations, international legislation, education)
new technologies (e.g. offshore shellfish culture, hatchery/nursery)
• The topics will be addressed in separate parallel sessions after plenary introductions by keynote speakers. The results of parallel sessions will be reported at a plenary meeting at the end of the symposium. Each session will
