Accurate and efficient clinical coding is key to ensure fair and timely payments in a world of PbR. As hospitals prioritise financial stability, and PCTs seek assurance of fair activity recording and billing, the profile and standards of clinical coding must be raised. Clinicians must be engaged in the coding process and coding practices must be redesigned for efficient and accurate working. This conference comes at a critical time following the recent announcement of a national programme of clinical coding audit by the Audit Commission, and will focus on practical issues surrounding implementation of this audit, as well as best practice guidance for achieving strong working relationships between commissioners and providers, and clinicians and coders
