DESCRIPTION:
Employment and academics are not enough. With increasing numbers of learners with autism being educated in more inclusive settings, special attention must be paid to their transition needs beyond classroom academics. Today, professionals, families and learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders are beginning to redefine the outcomes of the transition process beyond employment to include measures of personal competence and life satisfaction. To this end, this workshop will provide an overview and practical strategies for transition planning in support of competent adulthood, inclusive of employment, social skills, sexuality and quality of life.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
Identify the components of a comprehensive transition plan; Describe the individually determined components of an assessment of quality of life; Identify a minimum of six strategies for promoting greater social competence; Describe three components of sexuality education and discuss how they might impact learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD); Recognize the importance of peer training as one component of successful transition planning
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Special Educators, Related Service Providers, Counselors, Vocational Training Teachers and Supervisors, Administrators and Parents will benefit from attending this workshop.
