Venue Global Human Resources Forum 2007
Description With the transition to a knowledge-based economy, individual enterprises and nation states have set it a top agenda to devise innovative measures to recruit, train and reward the best and brightest brains as a key to sustainable development. And as globalization continues to generate fast changes in terms of labor mobility, common markets, commodity standards and multinational enterprises, approaches to HRD have ceased to be a purely national concern. It is becoming increasingly necessary for the entire world to address HRD within a wider regional and international framework, and to build on each other’s success based on an extensive sharing of better practices.

It was upon such recognition on the need for a global perspective on human resources that the Government of Korea, in collaboration with the Korea Economic Daily and the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training, initiated the Global Human Resources Forum and organized the first gathering in Seoul in November 2006.

The 1st Forum brought together over 2,500 global leaders from public and private sectors including international organizations and prestigious universities. Prominent figures who featured at the Forum included Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft and Paul Wolfowitz, President of the World Bank in video addresses; Bertel Haarder, Danish Minister of Education; Barbara Ischinger, Director of the OECD Directorate of Education; Peter Plympton Smith, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO; Professor Robert Barro of Harvard University; and Professor Thomas Kochan of MIT.

Thanks to the huge success of the inaugural gathering, the forthcoming 2nd Global HR Forum is already drawing keen attention from around the world. As many experts agree, it is especially significant that this Forum is being held in Korea, a country that has achieved an unprecedented level of economic growth backed by well-educated and skilled workforce.

The second annual Forum will convene from October 23 to 25, 2007 under the central theme of “HR Solutions for the Next Generation,” opening separate Sessions to allow for in-depth debate between key public and private stakeholders. Participants are invited to engage in a rigorous search for viable solutions on core themes including the innovation of higher education, innovative talent strategies in global enterprises, and national HR strategies for sustainable development.
