SYMPOSIUM ON EMERGING DEVELOPMENTS IN MULTI-HAZARD ENGINEERING
September 18, 2007 - McGraw-Hill Auditorium, New York City

Recent events such as the World Trade Center collapse, the December 2004 Sumatra Earthquake and Indian Ocean Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina have highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of situations where failure of engineered infrastructure systems to achieve their performance objectives results from two or more hazards occurring simultaneously or in close succession. In such multi-hazard situations, a number of topics of interest emerge, including: system failures resulting from cascading and escalating failures; interactions and dependencies among subsystems affecting overall system reliability; mitigation measures for one hazard that may either conflict, or assist with the mitigation needs for another hazard; multi-hazard quantitative risk assessment; and cost/benefit analysis and life-cycle costs.

This symposium addresses different facets of multi-hazard considerations in infrastructure applications and aims to establish the quantitative methods and guidelines needed to promote their use. Nationally recognized researchers and practitioners will discuss a variety of solutions and applications, including adapting technologies that have been developed for a specific hazard to solve multi-hazard problems, and developing new technologies to mitigate a variety of threats. The symposium aims at developing an integrated risk assessment framework for multi-hazard environments and will address assessment and mitigation of risk from competing low-probability high-consequence hazards.

This Symposium is intended to highlight recent engineering advances in the new field of multi-hazard engineering. The organizers believe that the utilization/furthering of these technologies for use in multi-hazard engineering will help to reduce overall costs while maintaining or increasing safety levels.
