Description SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES – DAY 1 - AMENORRHEA – Causes of primary and secondary amenorrhea and their associated health risks, as well as appropriate evaluation for both. Provide therapy to the patient with regard to hormone replacement therapy or infertility. ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES: GOOD, BAD AND CONTROVERSIAL – Clinical differences in oral contraceptives. Appropriate agent for specific patients. Relative and absolute contraindications to oral contraceptives. ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING – Define abnormal uterine bleeding. Functional and organic causes. Manage most non-surgical etiologies of this problem. ANEMIA IN WOMEN – A FINDING, NOT YET A DIAGNOSIS – Common anemias and their usual etiology. Diagnostic evaluation needed to determine the etiology of the anemia. Therapeutic options. Follow-up plans for assessing the efficacy of treatment. DAY 2 - CHRONIC ANOVULATION – Hypothalamic, pituitary and ovarian causes of anovulation. Associated health risks. Treatment regimen. OSTEOPOROSIS: TREATMENT AND PREVENTION – Risk factors associated with osteoporosis. Current methods for evaluating patients at risk for osteoporosis. Therapeutic classes of medications and their appropriate use. MENOPAUSE: MYTHS AND REALITIES – Issues that face the menopausal woman. True concerns and current anecdotal myths. Discuss topics such as: osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and endometrial cancer as well as their current therapies. MIGRAINE HEADACHES – UPDATE ON DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT – Evaluating a patient with possible migraine headaches. Advantages of supportive therapy and lifestyle changes to treat migraine headaches. Pharmacologic options for treating an acute migraine headache. When prophylactic therapy is appropriate for patients with recurrent migraine headaches. DAY 3 - HIRSUTISM – Pathophysiology of abnormal body hair growth. Source of androgen excess. Current treatment options. PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME – Identify patients with this disorder. Education for the patient as to the myths and realities of the premenstrual syndrome. Current effective therapies. EVALUATION AND INITIAL MANAGEMENT: BENIGN BREAST DISEASE – Benign breast disease. Evaluate for various conditions such as breast pain, breast lumps, and nipple discharge. GYNECOLOGIC COMPLIMENTARY MEDICINE – Forms of complimentary medicine such as acupressure, acupuncture, herbal therapy, massage therapy, etc. General questions from patients regarding various complimentary therapies. The basic mechanism of action with various complimentary therapies. Complimentary therapies to various gynecologic problems such as PMS, infertility and ovulation disorders. DAY 4 - SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS IN WOMEN – Treatable forms of STDs. Diagnosis of STDs. Treatment of options for treatable STDs. ECTOPIC PREGNANCY – Recognize an early extrauterine gestation and intervene or facilitate intervention before an emergent situation exists. Non-surgical management of Ectopic pregnancy. THROMBOEMBOLISM (VTE) DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT – Sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic tests available for the identification of DVT. Algorithm for diagnosing a PE in various clinical settings. Role of inpatient and outpatient treatment of DVT. Proper monitoring and adjustment of warfarin therapy for DVT/PE. Indications for DVT prophylaxis. PELVIC PAIN – Assess the patient with acute or chronic pain. Differential diagnosis and management options. True surgical emergencies. DAY 5 - PREVENTIVE SCREENING AND IMMUNIZATIONS FOR ADULT WOMEN – Evidence based recommendations for preventive screening tests. Routine immunizations recommended. Common side effects of adult immunizations. Contraindications for each adult immunization. Why and when screening tests can be discontinued. GYNECOLOGIC EMERGENCIES – Recognize, provide initial management, and identify when to refer emergent scenarios in women’s health care including: Abnormal pregnancies (ectopic vs. miscarriage);Menorrhagia; Thyroid storm; Abdominal trauma in pregnancy. USE AND INTERPRETATION OF THYROID TESTS – Utility of the various serum tests for thyroid function. The combination of results that occur in clinical settings. Follow-up of abnormal thyroid tests. ENDOMETRIOSIS – Have a high degree of accuracy in the suspicion of endometriosis based on symptoms and physical examination. Current management options with particular attention toward agents that can be effectively used by the primary care provider.
