Venue The Noise and Vibration Research Group of the K.U.Leuven
Description The Noise and Vibration Research Group of the K.U.Leuven is proud to announce the first edition of the Leuven Symposium on Applied Mechanics in Engineering. This symposium is dedicated to state-of-the-art developments in the world of applied mechanics in engineering. The first edition focuses on two specific domains of numerical modelling in applied mechanics. The Trefftz.08 workshop is devoted to the application of Trefftz based methods in engineering. The NDM.08 workshop concentrates on the application of non-deterministic numerical modelling techniques, with specific focus on applied mechanics and engineering.

The 2008 Leuven edition of the Workshop on Trefftz methods (Trefftz.08) is the
5th in a series of workshops organised every three years. Former editions took
place in Cracow (Poland 1996), Sintra (Portugal 1999), Exceter (UK 2002) and
Zilina (Slovakia 2005). Trefftz.08 aims at continuing the successful workshop
series and focuses on modern applications of Trefftz based methodologies. Mainly
driven by high-performance issues, Trefftz based methods have become
successful alternatives for the more familiar Ritz methods in various fields of
computational mechanical engineering including solid mechanics, vibro-acoustics,
thermal analysis, bio-mechanics, structural dynamics, optics, etcetera. One of the
main goals of the workshop is to show that Trefftz based methods can assist in
solving problems for which the use of other conventional methods is prohibited.

Over the past decade, the topic of non-deterministic modelling receives an increasing attention from several numerical
modelling communities. It is more and more acknowledged that including variability or uncertainty in a numerical analysis
embodies a very useful and valuable application of the increasing capabilities of modern (high-performance) computer
facilities, both in science and in industry. The objective of the Non-Deterministic Modelling workshop is to gather scientists
and engineers that are active in the field of non-deterministic numerical modelling in applied mechanics. The workshop
intends to create an open discussion forum on current developments and practices in ND modelling. As it is the aim of the
NDM.08 workshop to cover the state-of-the-art as well as the state-of-use of recent developments in ND modelling,
academic as well as industrial contributions are within the scope of the workshop.
