Description SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: TOPIC 1 - SPORTS PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EXAMINATION - Discuss pertinent history and physical findings for sports participation. Recognize the contraindications to sports participation. Develop strategies for allowing participation with certain conditions. TOPIC 2 - STEROIDS AND STIMULANTS IN SPORTS - Become familiar with commonly used ergogenic aids. Discuss the rationale for their use. Determine which ones are beneficial or not. Be able to make some recommendations when patients ask about them. TOPIC 3 - CONCUSSIONS - Who Plays and Who Stays - Discuss the definition and causes of a concussion. Review the pertinent anatomy. Discuss the guidelines for an adequate evaluation and decisions regarding the ability to return to play. TOPIC 4 - EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION - Safely Planning Exercise for Patients - Discuss the need for exercise. Discuss patient evaluation for exercise readiness. Become familiar with writing an exercise prescription. TOPIC 5 - COMMON MEDICAL PROBLEMS IN ATHLETES - Review common medical diseases seen in athletes. Develop management strategies in the athletic population. Discuss return to play guidelines. TOPIC 6 - LOW BACK PAIN - Review the anatomy of the spine and important nerves, muscles and structures commonly involved in the presentation of LBP. Review pertinent signs and symptoms in the patient presenting with LBP. List and recognize specific physical findings in the patient presenting with the complaint of LBP. Discuss treatment strategies available in the Primary Care setting. TOPIC 7 - SHOULDER INJURIES - Review the anatomy of the shoulder and related structures. Discuss historical and physical findings. Identify treatment strategies that are suggested for specific conditions.
