National symposium on Biophysics
Biophysics in Medicine and Biology

November 15- 17, 2007

Venue: Panjab University Campus.

Organized by:

Department of Biophysics,
Panjab University
Chandigarh-160014

Under the aegis of
The Indian Biophysical society

The department of Biophysics, Panjab University, Chandigarh on behalf of the Indian Biophysical society and the organizing committee takes pride in extending an invitation to participate in the “ National symposium on Biophysics; Biophysics in Medicine and Biology” to be held at Panjab University campus, Chandigarh from November 15-17, 2007.
Over the years, the discipline of biophysics has played a significant role in the growth of areas, which include molecular biophysics, physiological biophysics, medical physics, radiation biophysics, gene and protein engineering. Advances in these areas have paved a way for the designing and development of drugs and medical technologies for the welfare of mankind. To cover different areas of fundamental and applied research, scientific contributions in the form of abstracts are invited on topics: cellular and molecular biophysics, molecular basis of toxicity and diseases, gene and protein engineering, molecular modeling and bioinformatics in drug designing, applications of radionuclides in biology and medicine, and molecular and medical imaging

About the Department:

The department of biophysics was established in 1964 and it is the only department, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the discipline of biophysics (Hons. School). The department also offers excellent research opportunities leading to the award of Ph.D. degree. The courses being offered to the three years B.Sc (Hons. School) and two years M.Sc.(Hons School) students in biophysics are planned in a way so as to provide a broad base in the subject and be accepted in the diverse fields of biomedical sciences. Alumni from this department have been suitably employed and many of them have occupied coveted positions in the academia, industry, medical institutions, national laboratories and prestigious research institutions in India and abroad.
Moreover, the department is going to start two new M.Sc courses in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics jointly with Departments of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Therapy, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh from the academic session, 2007-08.The department has been given special assistance under UGC-SAP program and FIST grant under DST program.

About the Panjab University

The Panjab University designed by Pierre Jeanrette under the general guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier, is spread over an area of 550 acres in sectors 14 and 25 in the city beautiful, Chandigarh. The campus besides academic buildings has a health center, a sport complex, hostels and residential areas. The university, with its 55 teaching and research departments on the campus has 170 affiliated colleges. Recognizing the excellence in teaching and research, the UGC and DST has recognized a large number of departments under various programs of SAP, COSIST, CAS and FIST. The university has been selected by the UGC as the university with potential for excellence in biomedical sciences. The university also holds a five star status awarded by NAAC.

About the city:

Chandigarh, the dream city of India’s first prime Minster Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was planned by famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foot hills of Shivaliks. It is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning in modern architecture in 20th century in India. The city has prehistoric past. The gently sloping plains on which modern Chandigarh exists, was in the ancient past a wide lake ringed by marsh. About 8000 years ago, it was also known to be a home to the harapans. The city assumes a unique distinction of capital city of both Punjab and Haryana states while itself is a union territory under the direct control of central government. It is spread over an area of 144 sq. kms. The city has a beautiful lake, a rock garden designed by Mr Nek Chand and a Rose garden with a collection of large variety of roses.
It is located at a distance of 250 kms from Delhi and is well connected by rail, road and air routes. Recently, it has acquired the status of education city as it has several institutions, which include Panjab engineering college, Central scientific and industrial organization (CSIO), Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and research (PGIMER), Institute of Microbial technology (IMTECH) and National institute of pharmaceutical education and research (NIPER) and Govt medical college (GMC).

The day temperature in the month of November varies between 10 to 25 degrees and night temperature between 5 to 15 degrees.
