Call for Papers

• ‘To adopt, choose, elect, to some position’
• ‘To take upon oneself, put on (a garb, aspect, form, or character)’
• ‘To lay claim to, appropriate, arrogate, usurp’
• ‘To take for granted as the basis of argument or action’

These are just some of the definitions that the Oxford English Dictionary lists under the word ‘assume’. This interdisciplinary conference will seek to explore the various ways in which gender is ‘assumed’ in social and cultural texts and practices. The conference will feature research by (post) graduate students working in critical and cultural theory, literature, film studies, sociology and other relevant fields. It will analyse the different ways in which gender roles are both socially and culturally assumed and constructed. Proposals are welcome from any academic discipline or theoretical framework, and covering any historical period. Possible topics might include:

• Assuming Queer
• The Body
• Gender and Religion
• Gender and War
• Medicalising Gender
• Performativity
• Pornography
• Post-modernism
• Post-feminism
• Third-wave Feminism
• Post-colonialism
• Subversions of Gender
• Transsexuality, Transgender and Intersexuality

Prospective speakers are invited to submit a 500 word proposal along with a short CV by 31 January 2008 to the conference organizers at: gender@cf.ac.uk
