Description Twenty first century will be the century of knowledge where innovation will be the key for the production as for well as processing of knowledge. A nation's ability to convert knowledge into wealth and social good through the process of innovation will determine its future. Issues of generation, valuation, protection and exploitation of intellectual property (IP) are, therefore, going to become critically important all around the world. It is well recognized that in coming times, sustained competitive advantage will depend essentially on the ability of organizations to create, manage and market value-added, knowledge-based or intellectual assets to derive ¡§first in the market¡¨ advantage. Intellectual property, which embodies such creations, would thus become an integral part of an organization¡¦s competitive abilities.

As per the obligations under the Trade Related Intellectual Property Systems (TRIPS), all the members of World Trade Organization (WTO) are supposed to implement national systems of intellectual property rights following an agreed set of minimum standards. As more and more developing countries join WTO, it is expected that the process of harmonization will intensify. In spite of the fact that the 1994 TRIPS agreement calls for technology transfer to the least developed countries, yet that provision has scarcely been translated into action resulting in an adverse impact on the pace of their economic and social development. In such cases, commercially viable mechanisms will have to be found in order to implement the related provisions of the TRIPS Agreement.

To bring about the desired change, the need of the hour is to have a closer look at the existing IP framework with an objective of rationalizing the same in the context of the developing countries. This International conference is an attempt towards assessment of the existing framework and addressing the concern of the Asia-Pacific region keeping in mind it¡¦s socio-economic and cultural framework.

The focus of the technical sessions would be on creation of IP and knowledge sharing in the following areas:

ľ Biotechnology and Healthcare
ľ Information and Communication Technology
ľ Engineering and Manufacturing Technology
ľ Design and Architecture
ľ Foods and Agriculture
ľ Advanced Materials
Related Emerging Area

The discussions are envisaged to revolve around issues like in IP creation/generation; Traditional knowledge; Industry-Institute collaboration and Infringement and management in the above areas. Research papers based on real life case studies will be preferred.
