Description

The 5th GASS is scheduled December 5-7, 2008. It will be held at the traditional GASS place - Department of Architecture, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. The call for papers puts forward a provocative string of themes, ''FUTURE | ASIAN | SPACE''. They chart a field which asks discussion about the future of Asian urbanism. The idea is that GASS 5 acts as a catalyst for constructive thinking about Asian cities in the 21st century.
Call for Paper
FUTURE | ASIAN | SPACE
The beginning of the 21st century has already indicated the tremendous levels of change in urban Asia. Development of the largest continent of the world with an amazing variety of cultures has accelerated to the levels unseen before. That raises a number of interrelated questions, such as: How are Asian changing through? Where do such trends lead? What are the sustainable paths towards development? What is the role of globalization in urban development of the 21st century Asia? How to identify and perpetuate Asian values in urban life? How predictable are the development scenarios for Asian cities? Issues include a number of themes of global and local relevance, as diverse as globalization, oil, overpopulation, size, density, technology, global warming, poverty, equity, sustainability, philosophies and patterns of growth, creativity, sustainability etc.
The proposals are invited to address those themes and propose further foci - in diverse places, at different scales, and in varied contexts. The proposals should, preferably, clearly relate to one or more of the following sub-themes:
DESIGN | EXPERIENCE | SUSTAINABILITY
