On behalf of the SLA-AGC, we would like to invite you to attend the SLA-AGC 14th Annual Conference, which will take place in Doha Qatar on 15th – 17th April 2008. Hosted by Qatar University, this conference is the largest regional gathering of academic staff, researchers and Librarians.

Pre-conference Workshops Workshop 1: Negotiating Licences for Databases and Digital Resources As front line gatekeepers at the cutting edge of the digital revolution, librarians control how information is purchased, stored, and accessed. Complex laws and fast-changing practices in digital content licensing mean that every agreement starts from scratch, even as the availability of digital materials in libraries increase exponentially. The workshop will guide participants in a logical manner through the stages of negotiation, from initial awareness needed to determine organizational needs, to making the contract more understandable, to offering advice on negotiation skills and techniques, whether in written or verbal scenarios. Key areas covered include: Understanding your organization's needs What type of agreement to choose Usability and value Preparation for negotiation Communication skills The contract Disseminating negotiation outcome Staff development The negotiation timeline Who would benefit from attending this workshop? 1. The ability to manage a wide range of traditional and new media formats creates a challenging environment for institutions. This workshop will deal with some of the crucial issues concerning heritage preservation and access from a digital perspective. Key areas covered include: Conservation, treatment, and restoration of heritage objects (theory + Lab) Standards for electronic handling and access of manuscripts. Techniques associated with the creation of a manuscript database in terms of digitization and the conservation methods. Jumaa Al Majed Centre for Culture and Heritage’s experience in the digitization of heritage objects. Cataloging heritage objects in the electronic environment.
